Last Patrols July 2021

On July 8th Joe Roberts and Dennis Turner, with his grandson and daughter, represented Star Fort Chapter as Jack Griffith received a Last Patrol Honor Ceremony. Jack was born in Saluda, SC on May 29th, 1945 and went to high school in Saluda. He joined the National Guard in Saluda in 1964. He served 6 years and was discharged in 1970. He achieved the rank of E-5 and was a Sharp Shooter. He loves cars and motor cycles. He is a member at New Mercies Baptist Church in Ware Shoals. He has a great sense of humor and makes everybody laugh.

The program included the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States. Then some history of the flag and it’s meaning to veterans. Jack was then presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his service, thank you cards from all over the United States, a letter from Representative Jeff Duncan and a Last Patrol quilt. Then each veteran present introduced themselves and give Jack a salute. Finally Taps was played and a benediction ended the ceremony. Afterwards, LCDR Jim Peterson, USN retired, offered Jack a ride in his sidecar on his Harley. Jack had a huge smile as family members and some veterans helped Jack get into the sidecar. As LCDR Peterson and Jack disappeared down the road, I think Jack might have had the best ride of his life and definitely one he will not forget!
